Description:

Headwaters at Incarnate Word is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word in 2006. The Headwaters Sanctuary is the only nature sanctuary in the heart of San Antonio. Guests are welcome to enjoy the natural beauty of the 53-acred Headwaters Sanctuary while respecting established guidelines and restrictions. The Sanctuary is open 365 days a year from dawn to dusk. Parking near the Sanctuary entrance is courtesy of the University of the Incarnate Word; please respect their parking restrictions.

The Headwaters Sanctuary is widely revered as a beautiful, quiet, historic sanctuary at the headwaters of the San Antonio River with the Blue Hole spring as its centerpiece. Walking trails invite exploration of the Sanctuary that protects not only wildlife, but 12,000 years of cultural history. The San Antonio River is connected from its historic source at the Blue Hole to the southernmost Mission, Mission San Francisco de la Espada. Educational programs reflect on the area's ecology, hydrology, history, and prehistory. The Sanctuary is a safe haven for native plants, animals, and city-weary souls.
